I live in Chennai, and these have disappeared in the name of development:

  1. Gardens around the house.
  2. Lots of garden wildlife, from insects to mongoose to snakes etc.
  3. Verandah.
  4. Large Balconies.
  5. Socializing with neighbors.
  6. Playgrounds.
  7. Spacious parks.
  8. Clean air.
  9. Accessible and clean groundwater.
  10. Free water (never thought water would be sold one day).
  11. Giving free food. (when I was young, anyone could knock our doors for food and they will get it)
  12. Following traffic rules.
  13. Fast travel across city.
  14. Slow paced lifestyle.
  15. Not being greedy for money.
  16. Functions taking place in home. No need for marriage halls.
  17. Home cooked food. (I feel Kitchen should be eliminated to liberate women).
  18. We buying our own groceries.
  19. Going to office.
  20. Library.
  21. Teachers and principal having control of educational institutions. They being respected as Gods. (Today, the money minded politicians and businessmen donโ€™t respect teachers).
  22. Fountain pens & Writing. (I feel they are making a comeback)
  23. Not smoking, drinking in public.
  24. Talking in tea shops.
  25. Talking to people while sitting on culvet under a tree.
  26. Trees
  27. Walkable platforms.
  28. Financial Stability.
  29. Telegram
  30. Writing Letters
  31. Long distant trunk calls (STD / ISD)
  32. FAX
  33. Computer Printers
  34. Compact Disk
  35. USB (Almost Gone)
  36. Floppy Disk.
  37. Theaters and going to movies.
  38. Less populated cities.
  39. Receiving and visiting relatives and friends.
