What has gradually disappeared over the last thirty years without people really noticing?
I live in Chennai, and these have disappeared in the name of development:
- Gardens around the house.
- Lots of garden wildlife, from insects to mongoose to snakes etc.
- Verandah.
- Large Balconies.
- Socializing with neighbors.
- Playgrounds.
- Spacious parks.
- Clean air.
- Accessible and clean groundwater.
- Free water (never thought water would be sold one day).
- Giving free food. (when I was young, anyone could knock our doors for food and they will get it)
- Following traffic rules.
- Fast travel across city.
- Slow paced lifestyle.
- Not being greedy for money.
- Functions taking place in home. No need for marriage halls.
- Home cooked food. (I feel Kitchen should be eliminated to liberate women).
- We buying our own groceries.
- Going to office.
- Library.
- Teachers and principal having control of educational institutions. They being respected as Gods. (Today, the money minded politicians and businessmen donโt respect teachers).
- Fountain pens & Writing. (I feel they are making a comeback)
- Not smoking, drinking in public.
- Talking in tea shops.
- Talking to people while sitting on culvet under a tree.
- Trees
- Walkable platforms.
- Financial Stability.
- Telegram
- Writing Letters
- Long distant trunk calls (STD / ISD)
- FAX
- Computer Printers
- Compact Disk
- USB (Almost Gone)
- Floppy Disk.
- Theaters and going to movies.
- Less populated cities.
- Receiving and visiting relatives and friends.
